I've been an Occupational Therapist for 26 years, and I'm proud to say that more and more people have some idea as to what Occupational Therapy is in some way, shape or form. It is often described as working on the upper body, while Physical Therapy works on the lower body. Activities of Daily Living are mentioned frequently, including dressing, bathing, and cooking. When we think of Occupational Therapy in the school setting, we frequently hear people talk about fine motor skills, including cutting and writing. Occupational Therapy is all of these things and so much more! Everyday I work toward making a difference in all of the lives of the kids and young adults that I treat. I work on teaching our kids at A Work in Progress to independently regulate their emotions, regulate their sensory systems, become self advocates, and strive to live as independently as they possibly can. I am a problem solver and fierce advocate for the clients I treat. I love the diversity that this profession offers. This past year, I completed a continuing education course that focused on integrating primitive reflexes. Even after all of these years, I continue to find new topics that I can learn more about to help the kids that we treat. If I don't know the answer, I will work hard on finding it for you and your child. I am proud to call myself an Occupational Therapist. Happy OT Month to all of my colleagues!!!!!!
